Home made body butter!

Standard

This is a really easy to make body butter recipe. Everyone I have shared it with loves it and wants more already. So I would recommend giving this a try if you want a good moisturizer made of all natural ingredients for this winter.

The ‘recipe’ is actually just a ratio – 3 parts solid butters and 1 part oil.

Solid butters:

  • You can pick any plant butter you want in any combination.
  • Cocoa butter and Shea butter are the most commonly used ones. Both are deeply nourishing to the skin and safe to use for most skin types.
  • I would also recommend playing with Kokum butter and Mango butter.
  • Please note: For the purposes of this recipe, coconut ‘oil’ counts as a solid butter since coconut tends to solidify in colder climates.
  • My favorite combination is 1 part Shea, 1 part Cocoa, and 1 part Coconut oil. Play around and figure out what works best for you!

Oils:

  • Most commonly used ones are Sweet Almond oil, Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Avocado oil, and Olive oil.
  • Oils can also be chosen and mixed in differing ratios. See here for an introductory overview to the healing properties of different oils and how to use them.

Procedure:

  1. Procure all required items. I buy my stuff online from Mountain Rose Herbs and highly recommend them.

  2. Melt all the butters and Coconut oil in a double boiler. Maintain the heat in med-low.

  3. Once liquified, take away from heat and add the oil. Stir using a clean long spoon.

  4. Cover and refrigerate till the mixture reaches a semi-solid consistency. Depending upon the quantity and form of container, this may take anywhere between 20 minutes to a few hours. In case your mixture gets a bit too solid, just leave it at room temperature to ‘thaw’ a little.
  5. Now whip it good using a electric whisk.

  6. Store in airtight containers away from direct sunlight. There is no need to refrigerate.
